A few weeks ago, I stumbled on this Smith-Corona Electric on shopgoodwill, seconds before the auction closed. I'd not seen this model before and am a sucker for the 5 Series look.

I know nothing of this model (or of electrics in general). What are people's thoughts on the writing experience of this machine?

It IS a nice machine, and a must-buy if you're into the 5-series models. Finding one in good condition might be another matter. I rarely see them offered for sale, so I opted for one that was mechanically sound but a bit of a cosmetic eyesore.

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Mechanically sound and double-gothic is pretty cool!

Thanks you both for your thoughts! Looks like I'm adding this to my hunt list. Too bad I missed that one on goodwill - I don't have a blue 5 series, so it would have been a really good addition.

If anyone is looking to replace those worn small v-belts with new o-rings...this size from McMaster-Carr is the size that works the best.

I am bringing a 1959 S-C 5TE Electric back to life and my new o-rings are quiet and make the type-levers "fly".

Thanks, Pete, for the info. When I do manage to get myself a 5TE, I'll know where to get the parts (and which ones). Big time saver.

My 1959 S-C 5TE electric portable is all buttoned-up and humming away nicely.

It is very quiet with its new o-ring belts.  The old v-belts were slapping and one was frayed.

With a return of cooler weather in a week or so, its case will get some repairs and a repaint.

Rob,

When you land a machine, let me know and I can send you 2-pairs of the o-rings...for free.

Someone got a good auction win at SGW for this machine at only $ 21 plus S&H.

I was just not tempted by this "ugly ducking" version of the S-C 5TE electric.
