Typewriter Talk / Olympia SM9 circa 1965; Misaligned Machine and Casing

Hello,

I purchased the typewriter in late 2024. It had the subject misalignment and minor damage when I received it. At the time, I thought it was shipping-induced damage. The machine assembly was misaligned with the respect to the casings which I fixed and repaired without too much trouble.

In mid-2025, I placed the machine in it's factory carrying case until I took it out last December. Again the typewriter had this misalignment.

Has anyone had this experience with the SM9?

Can you explain more about the "misalignment" ?

Are your upper case and lower case characters not printing even with each other on the paper >

I am not referring to character misalignment. Rather, it is how the (inner) machine is misaligned with the outer case.

Hi Viejopatron

What you're describing sounds to me like a function or a malfunction of the suspension bushings that sit between the outer housing and the inner mechanism. On the older SM models, these bushings tend to sag letting the mechanism drop in the housing to the point where the carriage may scrape on the outer shell. On my 1972 SM-9, the screws that hold the mechanism in the housing, also hold the feet onto the unit. Take a look and see if I'm even close.
