I didn't do anything to the platen, but I'll look into the rejuvinator spray.

As for typing on it, I love it. It's the first I've used with the flat, round keys. My other machine is a Travel-Riter with grooved, computer keyboard-style keys. I really enjoy the solid punch that this Royal 10 delivers.
