I'm just curious what purpose these brackets serve? Earlier No 5s don't have them.

I fixed it by bending the bell frame lever and the keylock . Now it stops at the margin pointer locking the keys and then i press the release button and i can type 4 more characters then it locks. Then i press the release button again and i can type 1 more character. However it doesn't lock the keys again (the carriage doesn't move but i can keep typing over the last character), is it supposed to?

Does anyone have any pictures (one of the bottom left corner under the foot and one behind the button) of the area?

Please delete the other one. I wanted to start fresh with the correct information in the initial post and topic title.

Hello, I have a 1928/1942 Underwood No 5 (it was apparently completely rebuilt in 1942 or so losing all its character ). My issue is with the Key Lever Lock Release button. The bell rings as the carriage nears the right margin and the carriage stops at where the margin pointer is as it should but the button does not release the carriage it just smoothly comes back out.
If i push the bell rack frame lever to the right it will let you type more characters as it should and stop as it should when it reaches the end of the margin block. Am i missing any springs? How does the bar get pushed by the metal rod if there not close together at all? Am i just missing something obvious as I'm more electrically inclined then mechanically lol. See https://imgur.com/a/QXVbsqq.

Thanks

I see. My bell rings. I recall long ago a piece breaking off/coming apart on it and i don't recall if the piece was put back in or lost or possibly shifted and twisted.

I just reread the 1930 copy of the manual for the No.5 and it refers to it as the Key Lever Lock Release (I was going from an older manual that called it the Left Marginal Release Key lol) I believe that's where the confusion about what I'm talking about stems from. Is it possible a mod could rename the title of this thread to Underwood No 5 Left Marginal Release Key/Key Lever Lock Release Issue?
