Thanks for the tip, Zoom.
It turns out not to be the margins. Both margins were drawn into the center (nice for shipping). I used a hook to pull them back out to the sides, but the carriage still wouldn't move. The stop had nothing up against it.
Taking the opportunity to look deeper into the machine with better lights, I think the problem is in the escapement: the carriage rack engages a gear (I'll call it the carriage gear because I don't know what it's properly called), which engages a gear that's part of the starwheel. The starwheel/gear is off axis, and the carriage gear is hitting one of the starwheel teeth. So, I've either got to get that starwhee/gear back on axis, or somehow get it out of the machine (or at least out of position enough to free the carriage gear.
Looks like the starwheel/gear axel is towards the back of the machine, with centering screw in the front that it's no longer engaging with. Not sure what my approach will be yet, but it certainly will be of the slow and patient variety. Maybe I can find some axis to the nut at the back of the axel. Or maybe I can somehow pull the carriage gear. I should be able to pull move the centering screw back a bit, but I don't know that buys me anything.
Of course, if I am successful, I don't know if the starwheel axel the rest of the assembly is bent beyond repair.
Still, it's a fun adventure. I bought this machine and a few other non-functioning machines to learn.

Well, dang. Not only did I miss out on a multiplex on ebay today, but the winner of that auction swept all the shuttles I mentioned above.
That Ursula that Maschinegreshieben linked to is pretty cool, aber mein Deutsch is nicht gut.
Time to step away from the digital keyboard...

I had set the machine aside and moved onto the next one in my work queue. Thanks for the tip! I'll dig this out of storage and give it a try.

There's a seller on ebay who's been auctioning off what sort of looks like Hammond shuttles over the last few weeks. Are they? My only knowledge on this is what I can find via google.
Auction: Typewriter Spare Shuttle Plate Hammond ? | eBay
On one hand: they look like Hammond shuttles and have the letters in the right places.
On the other: the typeface numbers are in the center and don't match up with the Hammond typeface book on TWDB. Also, they're silver not black, unlike most of what I've seen online (I don't have a Hammond, yet).

Nice! I like it.
And yes, 50s is license for 2-tone.
Did you take this to a shop to paint it, or did you do it yourself? If yourself, what sort of paint did you use?

Ran across this today on Abe Books. Out of my league (and I'm trying to avoid ephemera anyway), but the photos of the typewriter shop are interesting to see what's on display and how they display it.

Oops. "Paid" should be "plaid". That's what I get for replying on my phone...

Ooh. Paid liners... That gets my creative juices flowing, should I ever decide to refurbish a case in a nonstandard way. A few years back, I found a site that let you design tartans. My wife designed one using all the body colors offered by BMW for the 1969 BMW 2002. We're thinking of reupholstering our 2002 seats in that tartan, then echoing the colors tastefully in the rest of the interior. A similar strategy could be done for typewriters that were offered in several colors (e.g. Royals)...
Back to the original question, it seems like there were lots of options, I wonder if it was a bit like cars in that there were a lot of dealer options / customizations (e.g. Matching your existing luggage). Or, did they all come from the manufacturer. Wonder if the NOMDA blue book has any info (though I don't have one), or if anyone's got salesman literature...

I just picked up an SC Series 5 Silent yesterday in a green case. Pretty sure they just painted it inside and out, but it brought up the question: what options were available at the time for cases? Is there any documentation on this?
I've got one in tweed, one in black, now one green-painted black.
Thanks!
Parts » WTB: Carriage rack for Remington Portable 1 (Elite) » 23-2-2022 14:05:47 |
I've an Elite RP1 with a single tooth missing from the carriage rack (part 52, figure 1, plate VI, page 18 here: RemingtonPortableService1931.pdf (xavier.edu)).
Of course, the missing tooth is right in the middle: column 40 (guessing someone in its past didn't understand the the carriage lock and forced it).
So, I'm looking to replace the rack with one with a full set of teeth if anyone's got one lying around. It is an elite, so would need the rack from another elite.
Thanks!
