Im going to get some rubbing alcohol now and dab some on. If nothing frees up, maybe a little degreaser and then oil will help.

Use liberal amounts of mineral spirits, and once it's moving very freely and without issue, a drop or two of sewing machine oil on each end of each rail.

Re: Royal Futura 800 Carriage Problems

I still havent been able to get it working et. Its ALMOST able to move on its own, but I still have to push the carriage after each letter. It does not seem to get better each time I clean it. What would be causing it? There is no way those rails are dirty.

Re: Royal Futura 800 Carriage Problems

With the CARRIAGE RELEASE pressed, does the carriage move freely/easily with your hand? Can you feel tension on it (the carriage should want to pull left on its own)?

Re: Royal Futura 800 Carriage Problems

I can feel the slightest bit of tension. It does not move freely, it grinds when I try and move it. The mainspring is not the problem.

Re: Royal Futura 800 Carriage Problems

Grinds? Is the rack not completely disengaging from the escapement when you use the carriage release?

Re: Royal Futura 800 Carriage Problems

Its completley disengaged. By grinding I mean it makes a quiet screeching sound, and I have to push on the carriage with a few pounds of force to move it WHEN CARRIAGE RELEASE IS HELD

Re: Royal Futura 800 Carriage Problems

I had an Underwood Universal that rubbed on the tab rack during half of its carriage return travel. Took me the longest time to figure it out because I couldn't see anything wrong with the escapement rack rubbing.
