My name is William and I live in greater Sacramento,CA..My son inherited a Lettera 22 from his grandmother several years back. We had it serviced by a certified tech before moving and everything was functioning. I am afraid my son did not lock the carriage before our last move and somehow the carriage has "jammed" while in transit. Any advice on how I might release it is appreciated.

I have a feeling that the draw band may be snapped and bunched up. Can you move it a little bit, like wiggle it? And can you see any string in the back?

There is a little wiggle of the carriage from left to right.I can't see anything on the back/bottom of the unit because of the cove. Looks like removing four screws on the back would allow me access to the internal mechanisms. I have tried the obvious (unlocking the carriage lock) but no luck. The carriage is centered on the unit. Glad to upload pictures if I can figure out how to do so but do not see any obvious way to upload any as an attachment.
Thanks

Oh, and are the margins set to the center?
If not, again, I am guessing the draw band has snapped. it would make since,if it was shook a little during transit, since its old. Your problem, if it is the draw band, is that it snapped and is all tangled up in the rails. Your best bet, even if this is not the case, is to grab a flashlight, and take a look in the back. You can also look underneath it and see if there is anything.

It sounds like the carriage lock is engaged to me. Are you positive that it's unlocked? Try moving the carriage lock lever while using the carriage release and gently moving the carriage back and forth at the same time. I have seen a carriage lock get jammed in the locked position, and maybe that's what's happening in your case. Whatever the problem might be, a broken drawband would be one of the least likely reasons for a carriage to be locked in its centre position.

I do not use a photo sharing service and was looking for instructions for uploading pictures from my own computer picture folder if possible.
Thanks

Photos can not be directly uploaded, so the only way to display a photo here is by having it hosted somewhere.

Hopefully these will help

Did you try what I suggested in post #5 of this thread? The images don't really help in terms of trying to figure out what's wrong with your machine. A few close up photos of the carriage and its lock lever would have perhaps revealed something.
I repaired the first link in your post but left the others as is; please follow the instructions I previously mentioned for adding images if you want them to appear in your posts.

I did try jiggling the carriage while holding the carriage release lever but no luck. As for posting the picture, thanks for the help. I have them on photobucket and used their recommendation for uploading pictures to a forum/discussion board. Apparently I am not understanding the procedure on this forum and will reread the procedure in the faq section of the Typewriter Talk subforum before attempting again. Perhaps you can explain what I did incorrectly.
Thanks
