Anyone got tips and tricks for amateur cosmetic restoration?

I've got a 1925 Remington Standard 12 in desperate need of cosmetic improvement.

Roughly 40% of the paint is peeling off, the chrome areas are covered in surface rust, the glass keys are cracking, and the decals are discolored, stained and chipped. I've repaired the mechanical side, so it's now a good working machine despite the rust, and as a hobbyist I'd rather like to attempt my first cosmetic restoration. I only payed $5 for the machine, so I'm prepared to splash out on repairs (within reason).

Does anyone have tips for removing rust, repainting, and sourcing parts like new decals or key heads?

Should I, for example, give each dismantled part a chemical bath, or will simply painting rust-remover on the assembled chrome parts do the job? Will my water-based gloss enamel paint that claims to "eliminate brush strokes" work, or should I invest in a spray gun and use an oil-based paint?

Any advice, warnings or general tips and tricks would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If the rust on the nickel (Its not chrome Ithink), you can use tinfoil to sand off the rust. It does a pretty good job with me.

I would try and not dismantle anything, and just use a good cleaner (PB blaster, degreasers, etc) and try and get them INTO the machine, not the paint!

You scored for $5!

Re: Anyone got tips and tricks for amateur cosmetic restoration?

It's a bit difficult to say which way to tackle a job such as this.  I would begin by reading through some of the relevant repair articles on this site first.
Big thing is, take your time.  The more patient you are, the better the result will be, and the happier you will be.
Why not put up a picture of the machine in its present condition...

Sincerely,
beak.

Re: Anyone got tips and tricks for amateur cosmetic restoration?

Thanks for the quick and helpful replies!

You're right, TypewriterGuy, I think it's nickel - I'm only referring to them as chrome parts because of the colour. Whoops! I'll definitely try tinfoil, and I'm glad you said it's best not to take it apart. That would be daunting and potentially irreparable.

Photos are a good idea, beak. I'll post some in its current condition soon. In the meantime, here's the one I posted in Recent Acquisitions before I did a preliminary clean. I've done searches on Typewriter Talk for repair articles in the relevant areas. I'll get reading before progressing any further.

Re: Anyone got tips and tricks for amateur cosmetic restoration?

In that condition, as I said, I would repaint it. Its not rare or anything (Sorry!). You can see the flaking paint everywhere.

For anyone wondering if you have a machine with smooth paint, and it looks dull and cloudy, use Meguires color restorer (For RV use) and it cuts through the grease and dirt buildup like butter through a hot knife! Or was it a hot knife through butter... (Just kidding! haha...)

Anyways, thats what I use along with turtle wax on a microfiber cloth.

Re: Anyone got tips and tricks for amateur cosmetic restoration?

Thanks for the information - you've convinced me. I'll repaint it. Like I say, I'm an amateur hobbyist. If I thought it was rare or valuable I wouldn't be doing the restoration myself! Quite frankly I find it immensely enjoyable working on old machines, and I love seeing antiques come to life, rare or not.

You obviously have much more experience than me, so may I ask... I'm planning to use a glossy black water-based enamel paint that is supposed to eliminate visible strokes if painted on with a brush. Would you say that's a suitable choice?

Re: Anyone got tips and tricks for amateur cosmetic restoration?

Ive never actually repainted a machine... Yet. I think you should use black spray paint, or you can use what you were talking about, and you do a few coats. then I think you put a gloss or lacquer on, but Im not sure. Someone else should be able to help.

I didn't think about adding a lacquer/gloss finish - that's probably a smart move. Thank you. Your advice is appreciated.

Okay, one more thing. I would recommend reading around, like this http://oztypewriter.blogspot.com/2013/08/one-day-typewriter-transformation.html
