I found some numbers on various places on the machine. No idea what the order is or what they mean. they were on the insides of the posts and on the bottom base (as the machine sits up for cleaning underneath.
Numbers are: 8 (8M) (11 V) (10 0) 15 2-8
The numbers in parentheses are listed one over the other on the posts with the first number being on top.

...I wound up with an Olympia SM-9 and an LC Smith (not sure what model), which has a decimal tabulator. I have not been able to find a serial number on the Smith yet. Any ideas as to where it might be?
Google slaps on ad on top of the legend of the diagram at
when I look at it, but it was just possible to grab a screenshot while it was fetching the ad:
Not sure how to interpret that but it's a start. Underneath the top bar?

Strictly speaking it's not a recent acquisition, but for Christmas my brother promised to take me out typewriter hunting next week. He's going to get me a typewriter plus corresponding USB computer keyboard conversion kit for whichever model I find.
I know some of the purists on this site won't like the idea of converting it to a USB keyboard, but so long as it isn't a rare model, I think it's a marvelous idea. I'll post a picture when I find a suitable one!

If the serial number is there it is buried beneath layers of nicotine and dirt. I think I can feel something there. It is going to take a while to get through all that. Very awkward place for it. Thanks for posting the screenshot of the serial number locations.

Some progress was made because of the descriptions in that screen shot. It pointed me at the model 8, 10 inch platen part of the Typewriter Database. There is one notation of a decimal tabulator there and that is for 1915. So, at least I have a notion of the year it was most likely made.

Ah, we are back home now! I couldn't get my laptop to connect to the internet while we were at my parents' house, and posting on the board is too troublesome in the iphone. I had so much fun antiquing with Colrehogan. She had lots of luck that day, but I didn't find anything that called to me. The day after we met up though, my family and went to the St. Charles antique mall and I had a little more success.
I found this cute little Remington Portable (V296497). I think it is a #3 portable from 1930. Was $45.
Then, I got this hideous mustard yellow Royal Safari for $15. It also works well, but I don't have a type sample in the pics.
My parents also gave me an Oliver, but I haven't unboxed it yet. I'll post pics when I do. It is very dirty and partially taken apart.

Decided to go for an Olivetti Dora. I managed to find reference to the Dora in a thread on Typewriter Talk called "Ugliest Typewriters", but I'm rather fond of its boxy appearance. I plan on repainting it blue before converting it to a USB keyboard.
This is the blue (not my picture, just found it with a Google search):
