Typewriters listed by date?

I am surprisingly often asked at work what particular machine would fit the date / location etc of the current film or scene in the film.  Set decorators like to get things right in this regard, and delving into a completely new field of study (typewriters) is impractical given the limited time available.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a site that can be used to answer this question; ideally, you could scroll to the required date and see a picture of all the machines from the popular manufacturers which were current at that date.  Obviously, machines from previous years would also be a possibility.

I suppose it's a bit of a long shot, but I learned long ago the value of briefly stating the obvious at the beginning of a meeting, and that the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask - right?

Sincerely,
beak.

Re: Typewriters listed by date?

By no means exhaustive, but you could try 'Machines of Loving Grace', since there are plenty of clear photos, and the machines have the date of manufacture in the captions.  For specific makes, there is the good old 'Typewriter Database' which is building a good library of pictures, again with manufacturing dates.

Although I still have hundreds of photos to add, you could try my Tumblr website. I've sorted the photos of the machines that I'm adding to it by decades; just scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the required decade to view examples of typewriters from that era.

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Re: Typewriters listed by date?

Then again for a film set you need to have a sense of which typewriter would be used where and by whom - which was the home one, the office one, which one cost a bomb and which was the budget model you only bought if you had no choice...
