I have a 1950 Olympia SM2, the early version that looks like the SM1, and the backspace key is moving the carriage back two spaces. Does anybody know what part limits the travel of the backspace, and how to adjust this? I have stared at the machine for hours now, and cannot figure it out.

I have the same issue with an SM9 I just got. If I go lightly on the backspace key, it will work properly. But it's an annoyance. I'll be interested to hear what suggestions others may have -- I expect the mechanisms on the two machines are similar.

This is my temporary fix. I cut the top off a small rubber stopper, drilled out a hole in the center, cut a slit down the side, and slid it onto the right end of this bar (whatever the space bar pivots on) under the backspace key to reduce the travel. It is not ideal, but it will work until I find the correct solution. The backspace key feels a bit stiffer this way, but it is working thus far.
