Half-spacing trick required
I use half spacing of the carriage movement quite a bit, but I have several machines that do not have this feature built in - by holding down the space-bar, for instance.
Does anyone know any dodge, trick, fiddle, 'work-around' or wrinkle to enable accurate (-ish) half-spacing on such a machine?

The only way I can think of is holding down backspace halfway...

When I'm filling out the account numbers on bank deposit slips, I hold the carriage release lever and manually move the carriage to align the typing point to the spaces on the slip. The old forms were perfectly spaced for 10 cpi, but the new forms are about 12½ cpi. All the best,

Thanks. The default method is, as you say, manually to hold the carrriage at the correct spot, but I can rarely do this accurately. I guess I was vaguely hoping that some other trick was known by someone - always worth the asking!

You could do this one of three ways: 1. You could press the space bar down. On most machines, this will be one-half space; 2. You could press the backspace key halfway down. Of course you'll have to eyeball where on the page you'll want to land your slash or whatever; 3. You could just be very careful moving the carriage back a half-space, again being careful in eyeballing it.
