How would you proceed with this two window Royal Model 10

Obviously it needs a good cleaning and oiling.

It appears to have been spray painted, but just on the sides over the windows?

Serial number appears to be X-831225.

thanks!

Mmmmmmm. Tough.

Well, I would just leave it how it is. Don't remove any paint.

You CAN remove the paint on the glass, but I think that would be hard.

Your machine is a Royal Model 10 (As you said) that has been dealer refurbished. Thats why its crinkle. Read up on some other threads and you will see how to clean that crinkle paint. Same for cleaning.

Theres also a thread about taking off the carriage (If you dare) although I do not recommend it.

Thank you!

I believe I'll try to remove the glass paint.

I dont know, I haven't checked. Just look in the typewriter database for that serial number, and it will say.

Re: How would you proceed with this two window Royal Model 10

The best way to remove the paint on the glass panels (they clip off from inside the frame) is to remove them and soak in acetone (cellulose paint thinner).  This will attack and lift the paint, but will not damage the glass or the nickel-plated frames.  You could try some acetone on the rubber feet, although they look as if they are getting a bit soft.  There are replacement feet on the market, so you could fit new ones if you wanted to.

There's not telling how much time your acetone recommendation saved me!  Thank you!  I plan to clean on it some more tomorrow.

thanks,

Pleased to have been of assistance !  Give the frames a good clean with metal polish, and clean the last smears off the glass with some denatured alcohol. Rub the glass vertically on one side and horizontally on the other side.  That way you will be able to tell which side of the glass the last marks are on !

Re: How would you proceed with this two window Royal Model 10

It cleaned up pretty good.  I'm definitely going to find some feet for it.

I bent the "rods" for two of the keys to get the slug to lay flat and that seemed to work.

I'm not sure if the ribbon advance is working, but everything else is.

Its not the ribbon advance that is the problem, it looks that the spools are the wrong ones.
Look up Royal Model 10 Spools.

I have some that I would sell you if you want, but they are beat up.Theres someone who sells new metal ones for something like $16.

Re: How would you proceed with this two window Royal Model 10

Not that I'm surprised, but once again you are correct.  When I removed the spools I could see that the gears function properly, however the spools could not engage the gears to turn.

As a quick fix, I super glued a cut nail to the bottom on the spool to engage in the gear.  Everything works perfect now.

I will order the proper spools when I order the feet.

thanks again!
