Different platen types/hardness

I have read in the LC Smith 8 manual where they had different platens that could be used in each machine and switched out easily.  Among these were hard platens.  How would I know what platen was installed on my machine? Is there a part number for the platen that one could use to determine this?

Smith Premier typewriters are cool!

Re: Different platen types/hardness

Does your platen have slots, grooves, or clamps as part of the platen or is it made of brass or cork? If the answer to these is "no", then you have a regular platen.
