How to get at the keys without breaking it.

I have a Smith Corona Secretarial 250, and the shift key keeps sticking, whether the machine is on/off. It's the key itself or something connected to it physically, I think. Does someone know exactly what housing piece to remove (and hence which screws) to get at the underlying keys? I can't really see in there, because of the way the 250 is designed.

Sounds to me like the key itself is sticking to the key surround on the keyboard.  There are 2 screws holding it on the sides.  Slide the top cover forward and look to both sides of the key surround.  Loosen these and try to move it around until the shift key stops sticking.  If that doesn't work, try removing it and bending the key front, back, or to the side just a little bit.  It'll  be trial and error, but either of these things you can try.  I have run into this problem a few times myself.  Oh, and getting that key surround back down over the keys and to where those 2 screws are will have to be done slowly a few keys at a time.
