Olivetti Lettera 33

Howdy,

Rob Greene here. Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I'm cleaning up an Olivetti Lettera 33, and I've run into an issue I'm hoping someone here can help me solve. How does one get the bottom off?

Re: Olivetti Lettera 33

One end of the cover should be hinged and the other end has two rubber grommets (you can see one in your photo). To get the cover off you simply pull it away from the machine, FROM THE END WITH THE GROMMETS. It will just pop off as the grommets hold the cover in place by friction.

Re: Olivetti Lettera 33

Thanks so much! I was wary of rucking it up. It has a script font, and I've been scrounging for replacement parts for a couple of months. A good cleaning and some reassembling and it should be ready to go.

Re: Olivetti Lettera 33

Where did you source the parts you needed from? The Lettera 33 is a very common machine, but getting parts must have been difficult short of buying another, perhaps non-working machine to serve as a donor.

Re: Olivetti Lettera 33

Would like to see the Olivetti cursive font when it's fixed - maybe post it in the typefaces thread?
All the best.

Sincerely,
beak.

Re: Olivetti Lettera 33

I have three 33s at this point, two that sort of work (including the script one) and one that looks like someone threw it off a truck. I hope to end up with one (hopefully two) that work. I picked them all up at lawn/estate sales for less than $5 each. Beak, I will be happy to post a pic once the script machine is up and typing well.

Re: Olivetti Lettera 33

For what it's worth, you don't have to necessarily limit a parts search to just the 33. The mechanical bits in my Lettera 22, 31, 32, and 33 are all near identical, so you could look toward other models too if you're still in need of a few parts.

Here's my 33:

Re: Olivetti Lettera 33

The 33 goes well with the wolfhound(?). I have two 32s, one of which gave up some parts to the other, and a 22 with a carriage problem I have yet to suss out. I've noticed the innards have a lot in common. Thanks for the tip. Maybe I can use the parts 32 to jumpstart the 22. I have a student who I'd love to send to college with a good portable.
