Looking for a specific make/model machine

I know I've seen one of these before, but can't recall what the model was.  I think it was a Royal that had a big long key that was directly below the carriage return key.  My recollection is that it was a standard machine.  All I can recall was the key at this time.  I know this is a terribly vague question, but does anyone recognize the description of the key and what make/model it may have been included on?

Re: Looking for a specific make/model machine

Sounds like you are talking about the Royal HH -- the key is on the lower right hand side of the keyboard. It's a vertical extension of the tab key, and at rest it and the tab key nestle together to form one very large-appearing key.

You had described it as being directly below the carriage return key; of course, the HH is a manual machine, so there is no carriage return key, just a lever on the left hand side.

Re: Looking for a specific make/model machine

"Carriage return" keys are as Fleetwing pointed out a feature of electric typewriters. I know that some people call the line space lever on a typewriter a carriage return, so you'll have to clarify this a little. In the meantime I'll include a photo of the tabulator key on the HH in case that is what you're referring to.

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Yep HH, and I know we saw at least one on our antiquing trip in St. Louis. I think we saw 2 actually, one in bad shape and one decent but I can't remember exactly where the good one was.

Yes, that's it!! One of my mom's bridge playing group said she has an old Royal in her basement.  Not sure if it is this, but for some reason this is what popped into my head, when she said that.  Will have to check back with her.

I showed her Richard Polt's book.  She seemed amazed that anyone would use a typewriter.  She was the secretary at our church for years.

Actually, it is a palm-controlled tabulator.  You rest the side of your right palm on it, push down on it with your palm when you use the tabulator while keeping all your fingers on the home row keys.  It takes a little practice to be able to operate, but once you learn how, it's a pretty nifty feature.

Looks like the palm bar is sitting a little high.  There is a tab that rests  below the front plate that can be bent to adjust the level of the bar so that it can rest at the same height as the key above it.
