Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

Just got a 1914 Underwood, and it has a decal saying it was rebuilt by Shipman Ward.
Its strange because I'm dissembling it, and the type bar rest says Aug, 18, 1903....

Like fingertapper, I don't see a photo in post #814 either. Actually, a number of your recent posts with photos aren't displaying them. I had offered to help in reply to one of them, but then assumed that I was the only one not able to see your photos since no one else was complaining about it.

What's the strange part?

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

It was made in 1914, and the rest says Aug, 18, 1903. Is it possible that they were building it using old parts?

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

There are myriad scenarios that could account for it: the original part could have been replaced at some point (before, after, or even during) the rebuild with one from another machine; the part could have been brand new and installed as an OEM part; the part could be original to the machine and the time stamp only an indicator of when it was originally designed as opposed to when it was made; the part could be original, and manufactured in 1903, when enough of them were made to supply models for many years.

Considering the typewriter has been around for over a century, who knows how many people have tinkered with it (yourself being the latest), and I don't see anything strange about finding that date stamp in it. As long as there have been typewriters, there have been people repairing, modifying, and restoring/refurbishing them. And cannibalizing one machine to fix another is certainly not a recent phenomenon.

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

ALL the typebar rests on Underwood Fives seem to be stamped with this date.  It is probably a patent date, like the one on the scale at the front (1923 I seem to remember).

Sorry. I missed that reply. I did notice you had linked the photos on my first recent post which I had been unable to figure out, but perhaps I then skipped some other step.

Is this one visible?

Re: Recent Acquisitions Thread

Thanks for fixing the picture, Repartee.  The IBM looks like a robot from a 60's science-fiction movie.  Very interesting!
