Top/bottom margins for Royal KMG?

So this is probably a dumb question. I'm used to using portables and on those, probably because of the smaller size of the platen, the top and bottom margins on pages are easy match up. I can get it so that there's about a 1 inch margin on the top and when I've typed to the bottom of the page there's about 1 inch of space left when the paper kicks out.

Now I've been using a KMG but the larger platen requires that I pull more of the page through before clamping it under the feed rollers, leaving me with a margin well over 1 inch on the top and well under 1 inch by the time I've reached the bottom.

Obviously this doesn't keep me from using the machine, but it is a little annoying since the typed pages I had before, on the portables, were centered nicely. Is there a way to adjust the height of the platen or feed rollers so that the top margin is not so huge? Or a way to gauge when I'm nearing the bottom of the page so as to keep that margin from being really tiny? All I've been able to come up with is not securing the paper under the feed rollers until I type the first line, but I don't think this is how people used typewriters decades ago to get even margins on their pages.

Thanks for reading!

I'm not sure I understand, but I always get a reasonable top margin whenever using my KMG. Are you placing the bail rollers one inch from the top, or the surface where you will be typing? How do you load your paper?

A high schooler with a lot of typewriters. That's pretty much about it.

There's no need to feed the paper until it reaches the paper bail. The KMG has two card holders on either end of the alignment scale that do a good job of holding the leading edge of a sheet untill it does reach the paper bail rollers.

Re: Top/bottom margins for Royal KMG?

Thanks for your input. In response to ztyper, as far as I know I'm loading the paper the way you're supposed to. It's the way I've always loaded it in my typewriters. Here is a picture of the way it looks before I begin writing.

I like to have it under the bail to keep the page held down, but because of the larger platen on standard machines it requires me to pull more paper through and sacrifice room at the bottom of the page. Also, I think I just have the bail set where it is--I don't know that I can really adjust that. Can I? I just lift it or pull it forward when placing paper in and snap it back in place when typing.

Uwe, this is the way it looks if I don't secure the paper in the bail before writing:

Like I said, this approach works. The paper just flaps around for the first line or two of typing and I wasn't sure if that's how it was supposed to work or if there was something to adjust so that the page was held down. I guess I'm just used to portables with smaller platens.

Thanks again. Let me know if there is something on the machine I'm not utilizing!

You're not using the card holders, which I referred to in my previous post. They're designed for typing on the very top of paper, cards and envelopes.

Awesome--always wondered what the real function of those was. I had just used them now and then as a kind of visual guide. Thanks!

I know this is an old post, and I know there is no problem to solve.  But I wanted to ask this to see if I'm right:  Is this a picture of a Royal FP?

Yes, a '58 FP. Obviously not a KMG, but the card holders are similar and it was the photo that was most immediately avaliable that would illustrate my point.

Re: Top/bottom margins for Royal KMG?

I thought it was an FP because of the quick-change vibrator--the kind you squeeze in the inner tabs so you can just drop in the ribbon.  I have a 1959 Royal RE that's similarly equipped.  Underwood also had this feature beginning with their TouchMaster II in early 1959--I have one of those.  It was my late mother's very last typewriter, so You KNOW I'm keeping that one.
