Good question. If we knew what the survival rates were for typewriters in general, those numbers could be applied to known production runs to give rough estimates as to which machines might truly be rare. Early typewriters aside, I've found that once you get into 20th century models, rare is an overused term (even if it is a rather ambiguous one).
