Live in North America? Ribbon sale!

I just got back from Staples on a paper run (there's a new renewable resource wheat-based paper that I wanted to try), and was surprised when I was there to find that they were clearing out all of the typewriter ribbon. Apparently Staples will only sell ribbon online in the future and they are blowing out the in-store ribbon stock. Unfortunately, the shelves in my local store were picked fairly clean already, but I did get three ribbons for the Selectric II and III for only $2.95 each. At those prices I'll have to check a few other stores and stock up.

That explains why I haven't been able to find it at my local store in the last few weeks. I'll have to check out other stores nearby. Thanks for the heads up.

Could this mean other stores are going to follow, and that for anyone to get any ribbon at all must have access to a computer and a credit card, or could they just order through the store?

Re: Live in North America? Ribbon sale!

I'm sure if you walked into a Staples that you'd be able to order anything they have online, they just won't physically carry stock in the store itself. Makes sense for slow-selling, low volume items.

In the US, I believe Staples stopped carrying universal typewriter ribbon a while ago; at least I have not seen it in my area (Ohio) or on their US website either--just calculator ribbons, and various electric/electronic style cartridge ribbons.

Yes, I agree. The brand is Porelon, and the item is packaged as being printer ribbon -- black ribbon only, in universal-type spools. They had this item in-store (never more than two or three on the rack) until a few weeks ago.

Currently the only Porelon ribbon they carry, that I can find in their store or online, is calculator ribbon, which will work in a typewriter, but is much shorter.

Re: Live in North America? Ribbon sale!

For several years, I've been using Epson printer cartridges (I forget the number).  Are you saying that soon we will have to order even these online?  I know that to order online, you have to have a credit card.  I don't have one, and I certainly don't want one.  I don't trust them, nor do I trust debit cards.  I've managed to live life without them, and would prefer to continue doing so.  I wouldn't have either one.   Would I still be able to order these cartridges through the store?

Here's the linkto the standard typewriter ribbon on the Canadian website, but it's showing out of stock at the moment. When I searched on the US site I was surprised that it forced me to select a brand/model to continue the search. Sure, ribbon is easy to get online, but I always liked the fact that it was available at a reasonable price, locally; it will be a real shame if Staples drops the standard ribbon, surely there are enough typewriter owners and ribbon demand in North America to keep that option open? There's also a Michael's in the same area, but as Spazmelda reported those ribbons are ridiculously short and suited for arts and crafts, not novel-length projects.

Re: Live in North America? Ribbon sale!

I always have to get it online, as none of the big chain office supply stores (Staples, Office Max, Office Depot) carry it anymore around here. It doesn't bother me to order it that way, as I am used to it, but the lack of presence in large physical office supply stores probably does not help the common misconception among many non-typewriter people who believe they stopped making it. I am often asked, "Can you even get ribbon anymore?"
