Bought a used Smith Corona Galaxie Twelve 6MLC 477774H. When typing a line, the carriage stops advancing somewhere in the middle of the line (but not always at the same spot). I turned the machine over and found a loose part (bracket). This may be the problem. Please see photo I submitted of the back with panel removed and a photo of the loose part..

Didn't work - I see a broken link.
Not familiar with service you are using but I find a good check that a photo is actually public is to log out of where I have the photos hosted and make sure it still appears in Preview. Sometimes you think a photo is public but you are only seeing it because you are viewing from a computer logged into the hosting service.

Or possibly you tried to post a link to an album suing the insert photo tool? Only one at a time I think.

I should also add that when the carriage stops advancing, it locks the carriage return lever (the lever advances the line but does not move the carriage.

Hi Grandpa
The bracket in the second picture is part the power space mechanism. In the top right corner of the first picture, there is a lever with a long slot that sits above a rubber finger (below with typewriter sitting on its feet). The bracket straddles the finger and is held onto the lever with a screw with the locating lug towards the outer end of the lever.
It is possible that this lever is drifting off center causing the escapement to lock up. I've tried uploading a couple of pictures to Photobucket, but Photobucket doesn't seem to want to play ball at the moment. Hope this helps a little bit,
Sky

OK, I'll try Photobucket again.
Underside of SCM Classic 12 S/N 6TLV-402932H. Note bracket on rubber finger for power spacer (top right corner of picture).
Close-up of Power Spacer rubber finger and bracket. You'll need to find a short machine screw to fit the threads in the bracket. Hopefully someone else here will know how to properly adjust the power spacer. On mine, the alignment tab is 8 mm in from the outer end of the slot. All the best,

Thanks Sky, I reattached the part per your instructions and that fixed the problem of the carriage not advancing in the middle of a line. I still have two issues with the machine. The carriage return lever doesn’t free the carriage properly and the margin warning bell doesn’t ring. I can live without the warning bell but I would appreciate any suggestions about fixing the carriage return. Thanks again

I was manipulating the machine using various levers and now the carriage return lever seems to work, although when I use it I hear a metallic rubbing sound which I think is caused by the ratchet rubbing against the carriage advance gear wheel. Is this normal? Also, now the margin warning bell works.
