Canon ES3-II Start up Problem

Hi,

I have an old electric Canon ES3-II that has been in storage for a long time.
When I turn it on, it tries to run a system check. The main part of the typewriter, wherever it is positioned, moves itself to the left hand side of the device and tries to run a system check. But it gets 'stuck' at the left hand side, and seems to be chattering away.
I think it might be trying to check the daisy wheel, but I can't see it moving.

After a few seconds of this, a long beep sounds - clearly something is wrong. It never completes the check, the system keeps chattering and none of the keys respond. I don't know how to stop this, or move past it or fix it.

I recollect that it would run this check, then re-position itself, ready to go.

I have been unable to find a manual online to see if I can trouble shoot this myself, but any advice would be really welcome. So would a manual if anyone happens to have one!

Thankyou so much,

Lisa

Re: Canon ES3-II Start up Problem

Hi All,

I can see that many  people read this message. I want to let you know I was able to fix this problem, simply by being quite methodical.

Clearly the mechanism was getting jammed during start up, so I worked through all the movable parts that may have been causing the jam.

In the end, it was a series of cogs that were slightly out of alignment, so I am very happy about that!

Thanks All!

Re: Canon ES3-II Start up Problem

Were these cogs made of plastic, and if so, was there any wear on them?  You may have encountered what most people who store up a typewriter of any kind:  Gunk.  I'll bet it was kind of sticky getting things going again.  Usually, that's the first thing I check whenever I go into a typewriter of any kind that's been put up on a shelf for a long time.

Re: Canon ES3-II Start up Problem

P. S.:  I usually check out this part of the Forum the most.  I may not always get to it when I want to, but I'm usually somewhere on the Maintenance and Repairs section lurking about with my "Tow Truck," looking to see who needs help in servicing their machines.  Now there are brands I'm not familiar with, but I can pretty well guess from descriptions what needs to be checked because most all typewriters have a few things in common.  My forte is the domestic, which in my case, American-made typewriters, since I've seen them the most.  I've committed many models to memory there, and can tell you exactly where to go, say, if you have a 1946 Underwood upright typewriter with a frozen right hand margin (they get that way pretty much ALL THE TIME.

Re: Canon ES3-II Start up Problem

Dear TypewriterKing,

I didn't investigate too far, but I will go back to the machine and check it out for gunk. Great idea of course.

So, for the small cogs, what is the best way to clean them up a bit - a cotton bud?

Thanks so much for your input - I really appreciate it!

Re: Canon ES3-II Start up Problem

I would say probably a Q-tip (I've never heard them called cotton buds.  Cotton swabs I've heard.)  Yes, one of those is probably best to get in there.  Also, check out the gear teeth, as these gears are most likely going to be plastic.  Also, check for cracks and things like that.  Plastic doesn't seen to last very long, and, sadly, you have to look for these things.
