LC Smith No. 5 basket shift troubles

Hello all,
at the beginning of the month I bought a 1913 L.C. Smith & Bros. No. 5. I have been in the process of fixing it, and one problem that I am completely lost on is the fact that the lowercase letters type WAY out of alignment, yet the uppercase type in the right spot. I'm assuming that something may need adjustment but not sure what to adjust.

Any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

This Is Mr. E from Typewriter Database.
When you shift does the typebasket move up or down. Seeing that yours is from 1913 it should go up. if it goes down just use the top nut instead.
If you look underneath the typebasket there will be a nut that moves with the typebasket when you shift.
You must adjust the lower nut to make the letters go up or down. It's pretty simple.

Forgot to add that you will need to remove the front panel (held in by 4 screws at the corners) to adjust the nut.

mre12ax7, thank you for you help. I did see the nut you were talking about but I'm beginning to think that something is binding or bent because  adjusting the nut didn't help and it doesn't touch the lowercase stop. However, when I disconnected the linkage to the basket from the shift keys, the basket dropped and the letters, both uppercase (when I moved the basket by hand) and lowercase typed fine!
Now, though, with everything back in place the problem persists. There is only one other thing that I can think of is the spring mounting on the left side of the machine.
Thank you again very much for your suggestion. I really appreciate it!

Re: LC Smith No. 5 basket shift troubles

Well, after some more fiddling, I finally figured out (by accident) what was causing the basket to be out of alignment when in the lowercase position. On the left side of the machine there is a spring and bracket that is attached to the shift mechanism. I loosened the bracket, it moved forward to the end of its travel, and now the basket is in the right position! The uppercase and lowercase alignment is a little out still, but compared to what it was, I can live with it.
Thank you to mre12ax7 for your suggestions.
