Got this yesterday from an eBay seller and was dismayed to find that the keys were frozen. I tried to fix that with denatured alcohol, but nothing moved. I contacted TypeWriterKing, who has much more experience than I do in these matters, and he suggested lubing all moving parts with hot tranny fluid. I did so, being sure to coat all moving parts and spritzing penetrating oilf for good measure. After a mere half hour, all keys were freed and I was typing. I was stunned by the efficiency of this method, and will use it from now on instead of denatured alcohol, which mars painted surfaces.

What brand/type of transmission fluid, and how are you heating and applying it?

Most any brand of automatic transmission fluid (tranny fluid) will do. My favorite is the Ford Mercon Five. It stinks like dead fish, but it sure does work--and so does the stuff Typeset has been using. You can put it on the stove on very low heat in a large tin can. You don't want to boil it, but just get a good temperature on it, and with the penetrating oil, you can raise dead typewriters with it fairly easy.

I went to the dollar store and bought a cookie pan and a brush and, since I was there, small wire brushed for cleaning type slugs. The tranny fluid at another store was $5. May be an unorthodox method but it works and I will continue to use it.

I'm just saying, putting it out there...
