Sounds to me like an issue involving the margin release.  I can't be sure, but, I am thinking that the margin stop is not meeting with the lower stop because it is either dirty and not seating all the way after the margin release has been used, or if it is somehow out of adjustment.  Look inside the typewriter to see what the alignment between the left margin and the lower left-right margin stop.  Let me know what you find out.
