Olympia Monica bell

Hi everyone,

I have a sixties Monica which works very well, apart from the bell. I can't find any pics or instructions on how it ought to be set up. In fact, there seems to be no information about the Monica series at all, and the images of other machines all look quite different. The bell mechanism is notably absent from repair guidelines- maybe it seems too obvious to be mentioned! I am hoping someone here might be able to assist.

In fiddling about with my machine, I found that the top of the striker is nowhere near the little point on the margin setter which should activate it. The top of the striker has a loose piece with a hole in one end, which seems like it should be doing something. I'm not sure the margin setter would hit the striker even if that floating piece stood up.

Also, in trying to see what was going on, a spring further down the striker came loose at one end. I have no idea where the spring ought to go, or how to attach it again. Possibly that is the solution, but I don't want to mess about and make things worse.

I have not tried to remove the platen or anything else, thus far.
I have taken a couple of photos of the striker, which I will figure out how to upload if someone thinks it useful.
Thanks for any assistance.

Re: Olympia Monica bell

See if that loose piece with the hole on the end has its hole threaded.  Also, look for any stray bolt inside the machine.  If none, you'll have to find one that will fit.  That ol' coffeecan ought to have something, right?  Anyway, hold the "thingy" with the hole on it where it looks like it ought to attach and see if it and the right margin stop reach the bell. Maybe the hole is where that popped spring holds onto.  I'd have to see a picture, but if you orient where that "thingy looks like it attaches to something while reaching the bell--chances are, you'll have that sucker buttoned up in no time.  You'll have to play with it a bit.  Let me know how you come out.

Hi, I can help you out by providing photos of how everything connects, but first I need to know if you have a first or second generation Monica (both were produced during the '60s). Here are photos of my first and second generation Monica to help you out:

1st Gen:

2nd Gen:

Re: Olympia Monica bell

Mine is not quite like either of those...most like the second gen though.
My husband looked at it and he thinks there is a piece missing. I am not allowed to post images yet, it seems, even if I can figure out how. ;)

Your FB link doesn't work; I'm not a FB user, so I can't comment on whether or not it allows external links (after all, anything you upload to its servers becomes FB property). The FAQ post has simple instructions on posting images here.

The link appeared to work by pasting it into a browser, despite not making a picture here. But thanks. I will have to look into photobucket or similar.

Re: Olympia Monica bell

I just started using Imgr, which only took a few minutes to set up and is quite simple to use.

Re: Olympia Monica bell

Sorry, no good still. Wish I could see how to modify/correct a post instead of adding new ones all the time.
Aha! this time I seem to have found the right thing to copy.

Re: Olympia Monica bell

The FAQ thread that I linked for you in post #6 of this thread discusses editing an existing post.

Based on your photo you have a 2nd generation Monica (it's the same as the second photo in my previous post, but only slightly different cosmetically because it was manufactured a little earlier).

Below are a few images of the bell's striker mechanism. I would start by making sure all of its parts are there, and if so, that they are all moving freely. It is not uncommon for such mechanisms to be adversely effected by dirt, dried-out grease, or rust, and it doesn't take much to prevent them from moving freely and working properly.
