CONSUL Portable - Part Ident and Part Location Please ?

Hi All,

Please have a look at the pics posted at the link below and would appreciate any idea where this 'mystery' part should go ?

Any info relating to the machine would also be greatly appreciated ! Pics at: baragwanath.co.za\Type\

Many thanks in advance,

I don't immediately recognize it. Have you tested all of the machine's functions? Typically a missing part would manifest itself by something not working as it should. Did you just buy the Consul and find the loose part in the travel case? I  have a number of examples of your model, but won't be able to look at them for reference until the end of next week.

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Re: CONSUL Portable - Part Ident and Part Location Please ?

Hi CB

Yes, that's exactly where this part fits. It took a little searching on my rebranded Consul 1511 S/N ZP-160243, but I did find it. The part appears to be a limiter to control how far the rack can move forward and back as well as the left carriage stop so the carriage doesn't slide right out of its track when you release the margin stop. The part bolts on under the carriage with a tab either side of the rack. I'll see about getting a picture loaded a little later. All the best,

Sky

Re: CONSUL Portable - Part Ident and Part Location Please ?

Thank you Uwe for the response. The part was loose in the machine when purchased and after cleaning and oiling, the user has indicated the machine is working OK.

I did check to see that there wasn't a similar part already installed in the machine and the loose part left over from being replaced. The loose part is twisted as if it had been installed as a 'stop' and somewhere and subject to some force.

Kind Regards,

Re: CONSUL Portable - Part Ident and Part Location Please ?

Many thanks, the part fits perfectly there and have scribed it slightly to make sure it can be easily relocated again.
Any ideas as to the date or period of manufacture for the machine would be appreciated ?

Kind Regards,

Re: CONSUL Portable - Part Ident and Part Location Please ?

Hi CB

Check on the inside bottom of the carry case, there may be a manufacturer date there. The serial number of my Speedwriter is ZP-160243 and the label in the carry case has "X 1959" stamped on it. This could mean October 1959 and with your serial number being just 6,581 units lower than mine, would probably put it as being built earlier that year or 1958 at the earliest. The typewriterdatabase.com site indicates that Consuls built under license to Remington prior to 1960 had the ZP- prefix. Hope this helps and all the best,

Sky

PS.  I didn't recognize the .co.za suffix on the website with your pictures, so a little Google search tells me that you are most likely in South Africa, cool. This really is an international forum.
