Emery cloth is like sand paper for metal but the abrasive particles are bonded to a fabric backing as opposed to a paper backing. This material is available in sheets or a 1" wide strip on a roll. In this application, the grit side is placed against the platen to grip the rubber and the strength of the cloth strip works like a strap wrench. Typewriterman has all sorts of neat tricks up his sleeve
