silverette vertical type misaligned

Hi, I have a problem with my silverette typewriter.
The capital letters type higher on the page than the lowercase letters do.
The vertical type is misaligned in other words.
Any idea how or where this can be corrected?
Any help much appreciated

Re: silverette vertical type misaligned

This is a common problem with typewriters. This adjustment is known as the "motion" adjustment.

I'm not familiar with the Silverette, so I hope others will chime in, but you may see when you lift up the typewriter and push the shift key that the segment (the "basket" that moves up and down when you shift from lower case to upper case) hits a stop that limits its motion. If so, the stop may be an adjustable screw, held in place by a locknut, that you can turn, which will adjust the height of the upper case letters relative to the lower case. It's then a matter of trial and error to tweak the upper case into alignment. (The classic test is to type H h and see if they're aligned.) Good luck -- let us know what you find.

Re: silverette vertical type misaligned

Hi 4ryan

The Silverette is a carriage shift travel typewriter and the adjustments are very easy to access. The machine is made in Japan so you'll need a metric socket, thinking about 7mm and a small flat blade screw driver. Move the carriage about 2' to the left of center and look at the back right corner of the machine. Now press the shift key and you'll see where the carriage pivots, you'll also see the two adjusting screws (upper case and lower case stops) The front screw is the upper case stop and the rear screw is the lower case stop. There is an identical set of screws on the other side of the machine.

Type a few sample letters in both upper and lower case, see which ones are the clearest and adjust the other case to match. Loosen the nuts on both sides and adjust the screws of whichever case needs adjusting until upper and lower case are aligned. Now lock the nuts and try again. You may need to have a couple of tries, but once you see what you're doing, it will make sense. All the best,

Sky

I try to leave them in better condition than I met them. I am not their first user, nor will I be their last.
