Which new Smith-Corona in 1959 for a college-bound 18 year old?

If in 1959 a guy turned 18 and was heading off to college which Smith-Corona model(s) of new typewriter would he have likely chosen?

Should have added 'manual' to the question.

It would depend on whether he paid for it, or his parents did!

Paper route money = Sterling
Parents money = Silent Super

I looked through the database to get an idea of what was available in 1959.  Didn't know which models would fit the needs/wants/budget of a college kid.

Thanks Uwe!

Okay, I'm intrigued by your question, which I thought was a trivia thing, but it seems that you're asking for some specific reason. Why a Smith-Corona? Fill us in, Dan!

I'm betting it's a cool birthday gift for a 70-something (father? Grandfather?).

What about the Clipper? That would have been the economy model, right?

Re: Which new Smith-Corona in 1959 for a college-bound 18 year old?

The topic of typewriters came up the other day.  A friend of mine is 75 and bought a typewriter before he went away to college.  He offered it to me for a price and I accepted.

He said it was a manual Smith-Corona.  He didn't say what model and I didn't ask because it really doesn't matter but I'm curious.  It will be a few weeks before I see him again and he should have it then.

I'm just trying to get an idea as to which model it might be.

Thanks!

That's neat. Actually, the other day a friend (who's in his early 70s) whom I was showing my collection to spotted the case of my late '50s Clipper and said it looked like what he went off to college with. He said the machine looked just like what he had, though who knows whether it was that exact model.

Re: Which new Smith-Corona in 1959 for a college-bound 18 year old?

After seeing Tom Hanks on CBS Sunday Morning on the 15th and hearing him make a positive comment about the Clipper I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is a Clipper.  I just missed looking at a Clipper early last week.  It sold earlier that day.  I'll be happy no matter which model I get though.

Last week I said here that I was looking for a typewriter and only one typewriter.  Does the typewriter addiction often happen this way?  :D

Oh God -- that's exactly the pathology.  We are here to support you in your addiction (meaning, to encourage it!).

The Clipper your friend has is probably not like the Clipper Tom Hanks was talking about -- that is a late '40s model, with the PanAm Clipper seaplane design on the ribbon cover, and a really gorgeous design in my opinion. But the later '50s ones are great machines too, if maybe more subdued stylistically. Any one of the three models will be of the same quality (Silent Super, Sterling, Clipper); it's just a matter of the number of features.
