How to remove Galaxie paper tray?

I'm stymied by a couple of Galaxies where I need to get under the paper tray. The platen comes out OK and the little screw holding the tray at the right end comes out OK, but I can't get the tray out because that pin at the left end doesn't have enough clearance between the hole it goes into and the Page Gage and I don't see an easy way to release anything. S-C is not notorious for making service difficult so I figure there's just something I 'm missing that some of you know about. I have  a S-C adjustment manual (not service manual) for Galaxie but it doesn't address this. Waddya know?

Re: How to remove Galaxie paper tray?

Ypu actually need to remove the freehead button (tiny nut unscrews, then the knob comes off) and withdraw the plunger shaft.  Then you need to remove the left platen knob (access the screws from under the carriage).  Now you can remove the platen shaft and the linespace ratchet.  Now at last you can lift the paper pan (deflector plate in American speak) straight up !

Re: How to remove Galaxie paper tray?

Thank you, thetypewriterman, for confirming what I feared---removing (at least part of) the linespacer. It's good to know that diving in there will be worth it. Wonder why they thought they had to make the deflector plate (paper pan in some other language) so hard to get out. So, Thanks!

Re: How to remove Galaxie paper tray?

The terms for typewriter parts are sometimes different between English English and American English - the same as for the parts of a car i.e. Hood = Bonnet, Trunk = Boot.  Deflector Plate is American, Paper Pan is English.  They are both the same part of course    Regarding the SCM, you do wonder why they designed it so that the paper pan didn't simply lift out !
