Nakajima AE-710 periods

When I type a period on my Nakajima AE-710, I get a double vertical line. Instead of an ".", I get an "||". I don't see anything in the manual about fixing this. Any suggestions?

Re: Nakajima AE-710 periods

Hi NT

This is evidently a print wheel or daisywheel electronic typewriter, so the issue is most likely in the configuration of the print wheel. Do you know if this is the factory installed print wheel or an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) replacement print wheel, or an aftermarket replacement? If the print wheel was not indexing properly to the positioner motor, all the letters would be incorrect. The odds of the print wheel positioner motor being improperly synchronized are slim to none, and I think slim left town. I also see these machines are still being sold through Walmart, so was this machine bought new or used? Answering these questions will help us in deciding which way to point you next. All the best,

Hi NT

There's a pretty good chance that your keyboard has a switch marked KBI and KBII (or something like that), meaning Keyboard #1 and Keyboard #2. This is common on electronic typewriters. Try the other setting from where it is now and see if that doesn't meet your expectations.

This is their way of using the limited number of keytops to access the greater number of characters that they can fit on the daisywheel.

Re: Nakajima AE-710 periods

The chances are that you need a new printwheel.  The petal containing the full stop has broken off and those two vertical lines are the result of the print hammer hitting the ribbon directly without the intervening printwheel petal.  Try another printwheel and your problem will be cured !
