Ribbons

This may be a silly question but do you put new ribbons in every machine that you own? In the brief time I've been collecting, I've acquired about 20 machines or so (we have a great thrift store near me!) and I don't know if I'll get around to using them all on a regular basis. So, the question is, do you put a fresh ribbon in a machine that you know will probably sit unused or do you keep it out. I also have some Royals from the early years which I will probably never type with, do I bother inking those?

Off-shoot question, has anybody used ribbon from Michaels stores? I know they have those junky plastic typewriters, but they also carry different color replacement ribbons, anybody ever use them with success?
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Ribbons

I am a cheapskate, so I move ribbons around. A machine that's new to me and which I know I will use a fair amount may get a new ribbon. But I agree -- no reason to put a new ribbon in a seldom-used machine.

Somewhere I read a review of the Michael's ribbons. Some of the color ribbons (blue and brown are the ones I remember) are ink ribbons, while others, like the silver and gold, are paint. I would stay away from the paint, since those will gum up the slugs with use. None of the ribbons is a full length, FYI.
