Most of the typewriter histories seem to focus on the US, as most of them are written by US citizens for US publishers - I don't have a problem with that at all, but would also like to read more about European and Japanese typewriter histories. Any suggestions?

Have you seen Wilfred Beeching's "A Century of the Typewriter"? It's kind of inconsistent in the level of detail of histories of the various manufacturers, but it's a good overview. As a Briton, moreover, he gives good information on the British and Continental makers.

Great. Following your recommendation, I've just picked it up on Amazon for £7, second-hand. Cheers.

Enjoy it! Not the best organized book, but informative.

There are a lot of errors in the Beeching book, but it's still worth a read.
I could suggest a number of very good books, but they're all written in German. Lippmann's history of AEG, Optima, and Olympia is fascinating because it's more of a company and factory history than the individual models, but again it's in German.

Thanks. Sadly I am monolinguistic!
