Waxing a typewriter: How to do it? And does it need to be done?
As you probably read in my other thread, I got carried away using some chemical cleaner on my typewriter (You wont beleive how much dirt came off!) It was an Oliver. I dont know if any wax or whatever they put on the factory was taken off. So should I wax it?

Personally I think it would be a good idea to protect the cleaned typewriter.
The stuff I use, Renaissance Wax, is used by the British Museum for all sorts of treasures on all kinds of surfaces. I have used it on my Remington Portables with the shiny paint and it didn't cause any problems, not that I can see anyway. I particularly wanted to protect the flaking decals, which it did. I dabbed some gently over the decals with a soft cloth and then very gently buffed to a shine. I also use it as a final polish on the shiny metal parts of my typewriters, and I used it on the plastic keys of my Lettera 32 today to bring life back to them after a thorough scrub. It isn't cheap, but it certainly goes a long way. I don't think I will need to buy another tin for about 10 years!
Whatever you use, test it on a small patch in a corner first.

Also, think I could use Carnauba wax too? I think I have some.

Thank you for the Renaissance Wax recommendation. Just used it to polish up nickel plating and enamel on Royal No 10 (1925) and Royal Junior (1937) It is a great product that doesn’t seem to work too aggressively.
