Smith Corona Galaxie (6-series) -- ribbon switch lever not working

Does anyone know how to get at the innards of the machine to work on this? As best as I can tell from peering down into the keyboard with the ribbon cover slid forward, there is a metal piece that is supposed to connect the internal ribbon switching mechanism to the ribbon switch lever. It appears that this piece is supposed to link with a metal piece that's underneath the ribbon switch lever and on the inside of the plastic facing surrounding the keyboard, but on this machine it is not. I think I can form this piece to reach up to connect with the metal piece under the switch lever, if I can get at it.

So, how do I do this? Can I remove the plastic facing? If so, how? There are two chromed screws on either side of the facing, by the shift keys, but the facing seems to also be anchored to the frame on either side, above the keyboard. Or is there another way to get at this mechanism?

What's really surprising to me is that the metal piece that's not connected is completely inside the shell of the machine, and I see no way it could have been deformed by being dropped etc. -- the typewriter shows no external damage at all.

Thanks in advance.

OK, I went back at it and I think I'm done. I was able to insert needle-nose pliers and then a long screwdriver to help bend the piece up into sufficient contact with the metal piece underneath the switch. I may try to bend it further, but it's working now.
