Re: Key cleaning

Lysol wipes (generic version) did the trick -- the mysterious white substance came off with very little scrubbing on my part.

Re: Key cleaning

Great news! Now that you have it cleaned up, how do you like the machine, especially to type with?

Re: Key cleaning

It's my second Quiet De Luxe (the other is a few years older). The action is very nice, as is the typeface, but my gosh I hate the midcentury Royal habit of putting the backspace key on the left instead of on the right as on most of my other machines. It is very disconcerting to hit backspace and get a tab instead.

Re: Key cleaning

It's funny how you get really used to one of the two, and how much of a pain it becomes when switching between machines that have it on opposite sides. My preference is right side as well, but mostly only because I prefer the margin release on the left.

Is the typeface anything special?

Re: Key cleaning

No, nothing special about the typeface I don't think, but it has a nice numeral 4.

Re: Key cleaning

Ever tried goo gone on these keys?

Re: Key cleaning

I'd be VERY careful using Goo Gone. From my experience it can be pretty harsh on some materials/finishes.
