Olympia SM 8 carriage rail adjustment

Hello all,

I removed the platen from my SM 8 (in order to get it recovered).
After that I installed the platen from my SM 9 onto the SM 8.

I noticed a slight decrease in print quality, some ghosting or double printing occured, as show on the first picture.
For example the 'a' in 'lazy' and the 'O' in 'DOG' on the last two lines.

I figured out that by moving the carriage a little back the print quality improved.
I did so by losening the two nuts at both ends of the front carriage rail, see the second picture (the nut is in the center of the photo)
However, I felt some resistance while moving the rail back, so my question is:
Did I follow the right steps/procedure to fix the problem?

Thanks,
Lau

Correction: I meant screws, not nuts
