I have a really nice old Remington Rand Model 1. But I have noticed that after inserting paper (good quality typing paper) that sometimes the paper doesn't advance. Its like it the platen isn't pushed onto the paper hard enough for it to keep good traction.
Is this something that can be adjusted, or is the platen mostly likely worn out and is to blame?

The problem is very likely to be hardened or flattened feed rolls. Have a look underneath the carriage !

I have no idea how to take one of these apart.

You should be able to see enough without removing anything. Turn the machine upside down on a carpeted surface and look underneath the carriage with a torch (flashlight if you are in the US !)
