Remington portable 2 - mystery mechanism.

Hi again folks,
I am still trying to figure out how to get the keys to strike the platen (I can do it if I hold the entire key bank up slightly), but I have made a wee link and now have an active Q key so thats one problem fixed. I've cleaned up the machine a good bit while I wait to figure out how to get it operational.
Todays question is about a small lever, under the shift lock on the extreme left of the machine. What does it do? It just seems to be a pivoting arm, with a spring return. There is one on both of my models. I have a notion that it has to do with preventing key operation when the key lift mechanism has not been raised, but I cant really see how it would work. I cant find reference to it in any of the manuals.
Can anyone shed some light on this mechanism please?

Re: Remington portable 2 - mystery mechanism.

I'm not familiar with the specific machine, as others here will be, but I want one and I am familiar with the escapement of the Remington Noiseless line, which may be similar. I've had key strike (or lack thereof) issues until a few adjustments were made to the escapement of my Noiseless Portable Model 7. Could you post a few photos of your machine, down inside the segment and underneath, particularly the escapement?

I take that back, the escapements are not at all similar, from the look of photos I've seen.
