I have the exactly same problem than Neil. I have taken out the plate to and made some pictures. 
I have marked with No. 1, the spring which I think is broken.  Do anybody can to explain where was hooked? I have just do not seen where should be. I have some 1mm piano wire,  do you think it could be used to make a replacement spring?
