Royal QDL 51 vs 54

I have a 51, and I have a 54. They feel completely different. I think the 54 has been used more, so maybe its just got more wear. Its hard to describe the difference but its there. The 54 types just fine but the 51 just feels better. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this kind of difference because they seem pretty much identical mechanically.

I'm going to be away from home for many months, and contemplated bringing the 51 with me because its my favorite. But I will be too heavily packed already, so I want to buy a new old QDL and have it shipped where I'm going. Just wondering if there's really any reason to steer toward 51s and away from 54s. I don't want to start a new collection in another state, lol...

The only Quiet De Luxe I would stay clear of is the plastic-bodied '60s model. However, why not get something completely different and increase your variety? If mid-century American portables are your thing then I would certainly try out a Remington Quiet-Riter, or the model that preceded it, the All-New Personal Portable. Both are excellent machines that easily rival the Quiet De Luxe.

Re: Royal QDL 51 vs 54

The QDL and me seem to be a match that was meant to be. I simply have not found another typewriter that just feels so right.  The ergonomics are perfect for me, and it feels almost alive.

Not that I've tried that many, because I haven't. I have others I like, the 73 Sterling being my next favorite. I have never even tried a Remington, but their aesthetics don't appeal to me that much. I really got into this addiction more to find my perfect typewriter, and less to collect, I just went a bit crazy during the pandemic and ended up with way more than I wanted. (Raise your hand if that happened to you lol)

I certainly wouldn't walk away from a nice Rem if I found one I liked, but I discovered that shopping around leads to buying so I've been trying not to even shop. When I do find myself on SGW I find I am almost always looking at 50s QDLs!  The good thing is there is no shortage of them so I should be able to find one to send where I'm going.

The hard part is getting one that has the 51 feel, and not the 54 feel.
