Mainspring tension

The mainspring on a typical standard seems to require about 2lbs of tension for the machine to function properly. If the tension is lower, there is insufficient power to advance the carriage, and presumably performance could be less snappy overall.

What happens if the mainspring is overwound, to, say, 3lbs of tension? Additional wear on the gears? A heavier touch? Noise from a too jarring movement?
