Re: New Member Thread

Hi Brent,

This is a list where members listed the compositions of their collections.

My recent list is posted up in Post # 55 of that discussion thread :

Re: New Member Thread

Hey everyone! New to the forum, but my history with typewriters go back some time:

I bought my first typewriter in 2005, an Olivetti Lettera 35. I had no intentions of becoming a collector and didn't know much about typewriters back then. (I still don't know a lot, but a bit more...) I typed quite a few pages with it, diaries and short stories. Eventually I stopped using it.

A few years later, my interested got rekindled, but I still knew little about them. I got a Lettera 22 in very good condition, made in Ivrea, and an Adler 32, also in very nice condition. Some decals from the Adler were gone, but I didn't even know about decals back then. My girlfriend (now wife) got an Olympia SM2 at the same time. We got all of these from the same guy, who serviced and restored machines; we chose those three from his collection. Now that I know a little more, I'm glad that those were solid choices. (I wish the Olympia had been an SM3, but it turns out those are rare where I live.)

Unfortunately, they didn't see much use until recently. Life got in the way and they spend a few years forgotten. Then, recently, I got back to typewriters. I started using them again, and I'm in love all over again.

And, since about a month ago... I've acquired some more.

- Olympia SM9: if someone told my this machine had never been used before, I'd believe it without question. It came with the original manual and case. Pristine.
- Erika 10: Also very nice. Almost no servicing required, just some light dusting.
- Lexikon 80: This one I got almost for free, and it was in rough shape. I took it to be serviced (not by the same guy I bought the other ones from; I've since moved from that city) and now it types, but the ribbon is not running, the carriage is WAY too heavy, and I don't know if the tabs are working because I can't figure how to operate them, hahah.
- Lettera 32: Actually, this one I got around the same time I got the 22. But I bought it online and it arrived non-operational. I never got around to fixing it--until now. Now it works perfectly; the only problem is that it's missing the paper support.
- Facit 1620: Very good condition, except for the paint. It makes a slight "rattling metal" sound when I type, but other than that it works perfectly.
- Olivetti Roma: Since the "true" Hermes Baby is a little rare where I live, I decided to get this Roma. It's in pretty much mint condition, even with the original manual. Supposedly, it's the same mechanism of the Hermes. I knew it wouldn't be the best typer, but it's sleek and cute and I like it.
- I got and almost free Portable Royal that I tried to fix myself, knowing that things would probably go wrong. They went wrong. A spring and a screw-thread popped out of it while I was trying to clean it and I have no idea where they go...
- Olympia SG1: it's on its way, but it's in a very sorry state. I'm already talking to a guy to get it restored.

And... That's it.

I'm eyeing an SG3. And I'm in the lookout for some other models: a Triumph Matura would be nice, and a Hermes 3000, and Smith-Corona, and maybe a Royal Standard, and... And...

Well. And here we are.

Nice to meet everyone!

Re: New Member Thread

Hi Folks.  I'm not really a collector.  I just have two typewriters I found in some items that I was left by my father.  I'm not sure if they are worth keeping, although the Royal makes a nice desk display where I write.

I have 5 photographs that I am looking at now, but I don't have a website to put them on and link here.  I don't see how to put them up here from my computer.  One is a Remington Portable that comes in it's own box.  The other is a Royal.  Serial Numbers are NX11278 and X-77193A (A or 4, not sure on that last figure from the photo).  Any comments are appreciated.  Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi James,

Welcome to the Forum.

You might try Imgur.com.  Once you register for free, you can upload photos there to your albums and then cut & paste those direct links into a posting here on the forum (with the add image utility icon).

On Imgur, you can designate your photo albums to be private or public.

Re: New Member Thread

Thanks, Pete E.  They require a text phone.  My landline can't text.  Oh well, it was a shot in the dark.  I'll just let them sit for now.

Re: New Member Thread

Hi James,

You might have a look through the typewriter database. Judging from your serial numbers, it looks like your Remington is a model 1 portable manufactured in June 1921. As for the Royal, it's hard to tell from the serial number alone. If it's a portable, then it looks like it's from the late 30s. If it's a standard, it may be from around 1924.

As for posting pics, if you use OneDrive or Google Drive or Dropbox, you should be able to hit an Embed button on their web sites to get a URL you can use here. (That's how I post pics).

Hi James,

This other site does not prompt for a text number...when one registers.
