Every once in a while, a good deal is still possible to find. This was in my local thrift shop today for $15:
1946 Smith-Corona Silent. Perfect mechanical condition, just a slight moldy smell from the otherwise pristine case.

Well done! I thought I had a similar find last year, but the seller cranked up the price at the last minute. I was annoyed but bought it anyway since I had not seen it in that model and typeface locally.

Jacking up the price after someone shows interest isn't cool. Anyway, this one is in plain old pica. Still, it was a nice treat.

Bargains - or normal prices as I like to call them - are still out there. I really like the Smith-Coronas from that era; they represent a nice balance of vintage aesthetics and useable performance. Great find!

I love the round keys. I have a Silent-Super from the '50s, and while the body still has that rounded '40s/'50s shape, the keys are rectangular. Just not the same. But it writes so beautifully and has those automatic tab sets, so I can live with it and not even cast a, ah, wistful eye -- boy, those round keys sure are purty -- at that '46 Silent. Sigh. 1946 is the year I was born. No, Must. Be. Strong. Must. Must must must...
