A friend of mine gave me this Underwood Number 5 a little while ago, saying it had been in their garage for a long time and they had no use for it. It's in remarkable condition considering its age and less than optimal storage.
The main thing that interests me however is the fact that the machine appears to have been refurbished at some point in its history. The normal designs and labels are missing, and the paper scale is in green instead of red (as shown below).
What's more, under the right top-cover there's what appears to be a second serial number, different from the normal one, which appears to read 511417.Is this normal, or is this some kind of franken-typewriter?

Yes, it was refurbished at some point in its history, which is very common. That number you are referring to is just a parts number for the carriage, and those are always different from the serial number.
