Restoring hard cases

I have a few cases from the 10s to 40s that have the black fabric on them (like my 1913 corona 3). That fabric is all coming off and I saw someone use waxed canvas to do it but they removed the riveted hardware.

Has anyone done this before, did you remove the hardware and use something else to reattach? Any tips on restoring the cases?

Re: Restoring hard cases

Tolex is the wrap used on guitar cases and amps.

I have drilled out some rivets on case hardware and used very small screws & nuts to reinstall.  I get those at my local ACE hardware and/or Tru-Value hardware stores.

I did not know that's what was used.  Did you find that you could have kept the hardware in place and strategically cut pieces of Tolex around it?  Or probably best to remove the hardware?

Re: Restoring hard cases

It was just easier to remove the hardware.  Some was rusty so removing it made it simple to soak in rust remover, as well.

That's not what was used. Tolex was invented in the mid-'40s and is not known to have been used by typewriter companies. Even with musical companies, it was only used by some of them, though Fender was prominent. Beware of "Kleenex Syndrome".

But it is a good cover for our cases! Available from MojoTone, https://www.mojotone.com/cabinets/cabinet-parts-hardware/tolex-carpet-and-tweed?page=1

And here is a great source for authentic handle material and hardware: https://brettunsvillage.com/tools-hardware/trunk-parts/trunk-handles/

And here's one for feet: https://www.performance-pcs.com/search/?q=case%20feet

M.

Learn to read more carefully what I write.

I did not say Tolex was used on old typewriter cases at the factory.

Tolex can be used as a modern-day alternative...has a good history of use with guitar cases and amp.

From now on, I will just pretend the Forum will allow "blocks" and I will not even bother responding to you, again. Won't even bother to read what you post.
