Re: THE END of Typewriter Talk?

Just joined and wanted to lend my support to the idea of community-funding this forum. Happy to chip in.

Re: THE END of Typewriter Talk?

Any word?

And, if the board is to go down, is there any way that Uwe or Sky could dump it to a backup for possible resuscitation later?

Re: THE END of Typewriter Talk?

Greetings All

That's a question that will need to be answered by Uwe himself; he's the curator of this wonderful forum. I know that Uwe has been pretty busy with other things, might be an idea to send Uwe a private message and see if he replies,

We humans go through many computers in our lives, but in their lives, typewriters go through many of us.
In that way, they’re like violins, like ancestral swords. So I use mine with honor and treat them with respect.
I try to leave them in better condition than I met them. I am not their first user, nor will I be their last.

Re: THE END of Typewriter Talk?

Many apologies for my absence, again.

I've been dealing with a lot of not-so-good personal matters, and it's clear that I'm not the right person to be running this forum any longer. However, that's something that can be decided later. More pressing is the issue of keeping the lights on here. The deadline is a week away, and here are the subscription options:

  • Paid subscriptions have no bandwidth or pageview limitations.
  • No banner or popup advertising.
  • No Boardhost branding.
  • Subscription Prepaid Service - No commitment and no automatic renewal.
  • 30 day renewals = $16
  • 90 day renewals = $44 ($15/mo. save $3)
  • 180 day renewals = $84 ($14/mo. save 10%)
  • All prices are in US dollars.

A few of you have made generous offers to contribute funds, and you have my utmost respect. My biggest concern is that this will be an ongoing financial commitment, and if we pay for a few months now are we just putting off the inevitable?

Short of some way of continually bringing funds in to pay for the hosting, how will this work in the future? We could sell ad space here, but to who? And who will be responsible for collecting those funds, paying the hosting, etc.?

Without answers to these questions and a long-term plan in place, the forum will be existing on borrowed time.

I’ll check daily over this week to see if we can make any progress, and will post a synopsis of ideas/offers so far. If we need a bit more time I will pay for an additional month.

Re: THE END of Typewriter Talk?

I've re-read all the posts in this thread so far, which contained good ideas and generous offers. Thank you!

However, to keep things simple and to move forward as quickly as possible, I've created a poll (as was suggested) to see if we can't raise enough funds to keep things going for the next full year.

I'm hoping this will be a one-time fundraiser and that we can come up with a viable Plan B for raising money in the future. This will also provide an opportunity to improve the forum in general.
