I love listening to the typewriter song. Jerry Lewis likes it too.
Be sure to watch from :25 into the video.

How weird. I was watching the Leroy Anderson version on YouTube last night and thought it would be funny to post it here too.
The Jerry Lewis schtick is a classic, but the first video linked to in Steve's post seemed a little odd. Did you notice that Lewis was returning the carriage in the wrong direction throughout the entire thing?

Wrong direction? It's the same direction as on this Olivetti typewriter; right to left.

He's using his right hand to push the line space lever and carriage to the left. Even if he was using a reverse type Hebrew model like the Olivetti in your link, the lever on his imaginary typer would still be on the wrong side.

He says the drawband is broken doesn't he? I wanted him to use the carriage return lever. Either side would be "correct" for the lever depending on how the manfacture made it. L.C. Smith & Bros. machines have the lever on the right as standard and other early machines often do also. I was looking on Google for a Hebrew typewriter to try to explain Jerry Lewis' movements. Not much to be found on right to left typers.

I've previously compiled a playlist of songs that feature typewriter sounds. This is what I've found so far-
9 to 5 by Dolly Parton
Wordy Rappinghood by Tom Tom Club
Down All The Days by the Pogues
Pas Si Simple by Yann Tiersen, from the Amelie soundtrack
... and of course the Typewriter by Leroy Anderson. Any other suggestions gratefully received!

It took me a long time to remember which song I'd recently heard that featured the gentle clacking of a typewriter, but then it suddenly came to me, Lather, by Jefferson Airplane. It starts around the 0:28 mark and even includes a margin bell.
That's an interesting list that you've compiled and now I'll have to dust off a few CDs and listen for the typewriter in those songs by The Tom Tom Club, The Pogues, and Yann Tierson. Understandably, my house is void of any Dolly Parton material (although I recall the song from the film of the same title). And it's impossible to escape the Anderson classic.

I had been on a concert of the Navy Band and they played "The Typewriter" of Anderson, as the first post suggests. The player even wore those vintage accountant sleeves (is that the right word?) on an old desk! Fun experience....
